Statement From Murtha's Office

The website was swamped earlier, so here's the official statement on Rep. John Murtha's death:

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman John P. Murtha (PA-12) passed away peacefully this afternoon at 1:18 p.m. at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, VA.  At his bedside was his family.

Murtha, 77, was Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense.

First elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in February of 1974, Murtha dedicated his life to serving his country both in the military and in the halls of Congress.  A former Marine, he became the first Vietnam War combat Veteran elected to the U.S. Congress.

This past Saturday, February 6, 2010, Murtha became Pennsylvania’s longest serving Member of Congress.

Death of John Murtha

It's very sad that John Murtha died. I may not be a huge fan of his, and I don't live in Pennsylvania and thus am not a constituent of his, but he did stick to his principles of looking out for his constituents first. He was also one of the very biggest of the critics of the Iraq war – and most people would have used payday loans or whatever to keep people from knowing they weren't for the war when he first started to speak out about it. (Even Hillary flip-flopped, but then again, Bill bombed Iraq with impunity, so she probably never had a problem there.) I hope his family can find some peace in these difficult times.
